I live in New York but I'm starting to think the only way to really speak Italian is to live in Italy. Otherwise, I just don't use it enough even though I study every day.

    We lived in Italy for a year, and I agree with everything you said! When we first arrived, I would make eye contact and smile with people and they would just stare. I missed my clothes dryer and air conditioning for sure. We met our Italian friends in Santa Fe, NM a few weeks ago and it was very hot. However, they all came into restaurants with hoodies and the wife brought her puffy coat and scarf (it was the middle of August!). I will admit I was freezing in one restaurant but I didn't have a hoodie the car with me. Another Italian friend that has lived in the US for 10 years and has 6 children still hangs their clothes instead of drying them. I thought for sure she would have changed her laundry habits since she has a clothes dryer. I loved living in Italy and experiencing the differences in culture, but I have to admit that I like our conveniences in the US.

  • @federicobacci7893
    @federicobacci7893 5 дней назад

    Our burocracy is sooo slow and bad, you're totally right 🤣 I can also confirm that dryers are not common at all. They are almost a mythological creature in apartments (at least the ones for rent). About screens it's a little more common to have install them if you buy a house, but often if you are renting it you don't care to install them because, at the end of the day, you're basically gifting them to the house's owner. Some people don't mind that, but many do. If we talk about air conditioning instead it's a little more common, but also it depends from where do you live. In southern Italy it's hotter and people tend to use it more (maybe it's not as hot as most of the US?). But the economic point of view is also correct, not just for buying it, but also for using it. So even when we have it we try not to use it if not necessary. @Shea Jordan sei qui da due anni? Ottima pronuncia!

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan 5 дней назад

      These things aren't bothering me, they're just differences! It's ok for countries to be different. I'm not gonna leave Italy just because my apartment doesn't have screens or a dryer, chill. I love Italy and I love living here, it's just has some differences, I don't get why you think I absolutely hate it here, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed for 2 years.

    This video was so helpful and informative! Thank you for the info! Like you said, there’s definitely kind of a lack of information out there about the whole process. I’m currently in the process of researching student visas, and I was wondering if you renewed yours specifically for another language program? And I’m assuming you renewed it from Italy? I wasn’t sure if you could renew the initial six-month or one-year visa for language a language program for another year, and have had trouble finding answers! Thanks again for a great video!!

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan 8 дней назад

      Hi! Yes I just stayed at the same language school and renewed my permesso di soggiorno from Italy. You just have to get another packet of documents from the post office and it includes instructions on what you need to include for a renewal. And instead of marking the box for the first time permesso request, there’s a box to mark for a renewal request. You don’t need to leave Italy, you can do it all there. You just need a new letter from your school to show that you are going to continue your studies as well as some other info like proof of health insurance, housing and enough finances.

    • @marisa5527

    Agree with most, but not all: lunch time IS a break, during which one takes advantage in order to have lunch, and it should be about one full hour. I am Italian (but lived 32 consecutive years in the US), and I can't stand the staring, as some folk stare into your car when you drive by, especially in small town... I once gave them the middle finger, you should have seen their face! Also agree with their quite common habit of passing in front while you wait on line... not everyone does it, and not everyone is that rude, but it is frequent, and the culprits feels like the "outsmarted you", with a smirk on their face. 100% right about how everything is disorganized and made difficult: always recall last time I moved before coming back to Italy, how in about half an hour on the phone (it was in 2006) I had gas, electricity, all the utilities contracts done... here is such a headache! Even opening a Bank account will take for several days! Selling your old car, to buy a new, or maybe another used one? Here everything MUST be done (very expensively) through a Notary Public! AC: I'd be dead without it in Summer!!! Impossible to sleep with 30 Celsius in a room! I keep it at 23.5, and low speed fan, and not blowing directly on my face either... When we were without Air Conditioning we'd be tossing and turning all night long, turning the pillow hoping the other side would be cooler... getting up exhausted the next morning. You didn't mention the mattresses! Recently (the last 10 years, I guess) there has been an improvement, otherwise most Hotels (3 and 4 stars) had very hard and uncomfortable mattress. Recall being able to feel the metallic coils with my fingers in a 4 stars that was boasting having had France's Prime minister Mitterrand as guest!

    Dryers in itlay don't have a market because in half of the country houses have terraces instead of roofs, and people love to dry up their clothes with the sun. In the south even in January you can dry outside. We have wires on the terraces, wires out of the windows and balconies. Most of italian houses got balconies.

  • @antonellaliaci2486
    @antonellaliaci2486 8 дней назад

    windows doesn't have screens because they are claustrophobic and don't let air and light come in. Also bologna doesn't have all these bugs and mosquitoes. My parents in the south of Italy have windows with screens but just to the house by the sea because they are at ground floor and it's full of mosquitos. I think generally in the countryside it's more common to have screens but usually you can open them allowing to have more air and light when you wish.

Anyway... this video is spot on. The only other shockers I would add are the aggressive driving and narrow streets that can make one's blood pressure go through the roof. Napoli was crazy.

    The things about not having certain things in our homes I think might be influenced, in your case, by you living in Bologna, it's a city with an awful housing market and the few places you can rent might not be kept the best (but true, AC is not that common, but screens on our windows? I wouldn't survive without and everyone I know has them, also I live half an hour from Bologna so yeah).

      Hmm I missed the point in the video where I said I absolutely hated my life here… maybe that’s because I didn’t?! I love living in Italy, that’s why I’ve chosen to stay longer and am pursuing my dual citizenship. Me discussing cultural differences doesn’t mean one country is better than the other, this video is just sharing differences. I’m not crying over the fact that dryers aren’t common in Italy or that cookies are frequently eaten for breakfast. You obviously missed the point of the video, and instead decided to leave a condescending and rude comment.
